SUPER WILD HORSES ALBUM LAUNCH!
Super Wild Horses will launch their new album Crosswords in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane this May.
Catch Super Wild Horses at Goodgod Small Club in Sydney on Friday 10 May, Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane on Friday 17 May, The Bird in Perth on Saturday 25 May, and The Tote in Melbourne on Friday 31 May.
Available from Friday 5 April 2013 via Dot Dash / Remote Control, Crosswords is Super Wild Horses second full length release and the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut Fifteen.
Super Wild Horses are Melbourne duo Amy Franz and Hayley McKee. Formed in 2009, the pair have carved a name for themselves locally and internationally as leaders among the lo-fi garage / DIY scene currently exploding out of Australia. The pair stitch together a patchwork of guitar, drums and keys over dual harmonies and sparse arrangements.
Employing a similar recording process to their critically lauded debut album Fifteen, which was recorded and produced by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control, Super Wild Horses bunkered down in the country over 2012 to completeCrosswords. Loading up a van with instruments, recording gear and engineer Jack Farley (Twerps, Beaches, St Helens), they travelled just past Castlemaine, Victoria and created their own temporary studio in an unused butter factory.
22 tracks were initially recorded over three days, but instead of relying on a purely live recording limited to the sound they could make as a two-piece, they decided to flesh out the songs with some extra instrumentation, percussion and vocals at Transient Studios in Northcote with the help of friends Liam Kenny (Bitch Prefect, Peak Twins) and Rick Milovanovic (Boomgates, Twerps).
Crosswords is the follow up to Super Wild Horses assured debut album Fifteen, which was released in mid 2010. Fifteen was named 'Album of the Week' by Australian community radio stations Triple R, FBi and RTR, and was released in the US on respected Chicago label HoZac Records. Following the release of Fifteen, Super Wild Horses toured the USA in September 2010, including a slot at the venerable Goner Fest in Memphis Tennessee. Back home, their on-stage energy has put them on festival stages including Big Day Out, Golden Plains and Sydney Festival, and has earned them invitations to tour with the likes of Best Coast, Foo Fighters, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Drones, Thee Oh Sees, Pond, Dum Dum Girls and Ty Segall.

MONNONE ALONE - ALBUM LAUNCH W/ THE HARPOONS + THE SUBLETS + TIM RICHMOND (SOLO)
Mark Monnone has put in some long hours and some even longer miles to finally touch down at the debut Monnone Alone album Together At Last.
Recorded by Gary Olson (The Ladybug Transistor) at his storied Brooklyn studio Marlborough Farms, Together At Last goes some way to logging Monnone's travels, both physical and metaphysical; from topiarian hallucinations at New York's medieval cloisters to using London's buses as a furniture removal service, these are brief urban accounts told with one eye for the absurd and one for the mundanely beautiful.
Having co-founded The Lucksmiths back in 1993, and with his buoyant melodic basslines a striking feature of the band's sound, Mark Monnone was also handy as the band's pinch hitter songwriter and was responsible for such radiant moments as 'Take This Lying Down' and 'T-Shirt Weather'. Since The Lucksmiths' demise in 2009, Mark has continued to sharpen the focus on his songwriting, first stepping out on his own in 2011 with the single Pink Earrings.
Together At Last is helmed by Monnone's guitar strum and warm non-singerly vocal and features backing instrumentation from the semi-regular Monnone Alone live band of Connal Parsley (Your Wedding Night, bass) and Gus Franklin (Architecture in Helsinki, drums) with extra flavour added by friends from Crystal Stilts, The Aislers Set, Ruby Suns and The Clean.

PIKELET SINGLE LAUNCH W/ SUPER STAR + GOLD TANGO
Melbourne psych pop wonders Pikelet return with the first evidence from their upcoming third album Calluses. Premiered on spin.com, teaser track Pressure Cooker is an eerie, loping marvel - six minutes of dark, dreamy post-apocalyptic shuffle - apocalysmic disco? It's a sure sign that third album Calluses, due out on Chapter Music in August, is gonna be worth the wait since 2010's AMP-shortlisted album Stem.
While not in the studio, Pikelet have spent the last few years playing with the likes of Beirut, Shellac, Dirty Projectors, Broadcast and Ariel Pink, while band focal point Evelyn Morris has drummed for the Boredoms at Melbourne Interational Arts F and even shared private jets around the country with Leonard Cohen (as a member of Clare Bowditch's band).
Now they're excited to announce a launch for Pressure Cooker at the Tote Hotel on Friday June 7, with support from Gold Tango and Superstar.

THE NATION BLUE W/ NO ANCHOR (BRIS) + DEAD
Single? Looking for men with beards in black t-shirts? Don't like conversation? Prefer to face an illuminated wall in cordial silence with others? May we present you with the hottest ticket in Melbourne for your particular thing: On Saturday the 8th of June, The Nation Blue, No Anchor and Dead will convert The Tote into a veritable forrest before your very eyes.
With a resting pulse rate of 105+ The Nation Blue have finally been able to stand up, brush aside the Cheetos and leave the house after a long secluded summer. They are sweaty, uncomfortable and angry and will be diving into the lesser ventured folds of their back catalogue, as well as presenting their first new material since 2009.
Brisbane's No Anchor are so heavy they disregard the entire top half of the frequency spectrum. It's been almost 12 months since they last levelled Melbourne and they are touring on the back of their fourth masterpiece The Golden Bridge, released late last year. Come and slow mosh to square waves.
Dead subscribe to a similar guitar hate as No Anchor and the bands will be releasing a split 7" together in time for the show. They will open the night in primordial fashion dragging a colossus of force from two brutalised instruments.
Witness this live evolutionary chart as one bass-becomes-two-becomes an appallingly played guitar. Hope I don't break a string.

The ever-impressive King Khan & BBQ Show returns to Australia this June!
Internationally revered, The King Khan & BBQ Show is Mark Sultan, aka BBQ; smashing snare, bass drum and tambourine with his bare feet whilst molesting his guitar and singing like a possessed angel, and King Khan, who's nearing legendary status for his advanced nuttiness and unpredictability, spinning and howling like a freak while belting it out on his guitar like a masher.
They're an elite powerhouse of top-notch doo-wop/psych/R&B/R&R craziness, which has been lacking in today's world of nu-grunge and calculated "careers". They've released three critically acclaimed albums in the past six years, a mess of 45s and toured the world. The King Khan & BBQ Show culminated in Lou Reed hand picking them to perform at the Sydney Opera House. They broke up, went on hiatus and after a three year absence, THEY'RE BACK!
This is the show to beat!! A real rock'n'roll maelstrom with tear-jerking love songs, punkers, improvised riot-starters, dance-floor shakers, sing-along stompers, wild rockers - you name it. They'll drench you in raw energy and all sorts of hijinks!
The King Khan & BBQ Show is not to be missed, come and experience the magic for yourself.

"Khan's a stupendously stylish vocalist, able to ape everybody from the Big Bopper to Otis Redding without losing a move, and Sultan's got some ear for compact arrangements and clever melodic interjections" - PITCHFORK

LAURA IMBRUGLIA ALBUM LAUNCH W/ MELODIE NELSON
Laura Imbruglia releases her third album "What A Treat" (Ready Freddie Records/MGM), produced by Melbourne's legendary Simon Grounds.
After whetting the public's appetite with singles "Why'd You Have To Kiss Me So Hard?" and the infectious "Awoooh!" (www.vimeo.com/lauraimbruglia/ awoooh), Laura is finally ready to present the other pieces of the puzzle.
"What A Treat" (which, incidentally is packaged with a fan-funded jigsaw puzzle!) heralds the expansion of Laura's sound from 3-piece to 5-piece band, introducing lead guitar and pedal steel to flesh out her arrangements.
After relocating from Sydney to Melbourne in 2010, Laura swiftly acquired some of Melbourne's finest musicians to form her band (members of Smallgoods, Ground Components & Midnight Woolf are in the mix). Together, Laura and band switch effortlessly from psych-rock to power pop to country, further enforcing Laura's reputation as a versatile, ever-changing musical enigma.
Lyrically, the songs are about unrequited love, poor decisions and the shame associated with finding oneself in recurring bad life patterns. Imbruglia's forthright style is put to good use dealing with such themes - her insights are harsh and often darkly humorous. Special guest musicians include Laura Jean, Ben Salter (The Gin Club), Seja Vogel (ex-Regurgitator), Fraser A. Gorman, Bob Harrow and Peter Lubulwa (Immigrant Union).
Ten years into her career, Laura has matured into a writer worthy of attention. "What A Treat" combines the punkier moments of "Self-Titled" (2006) and the dark country of "The Lighter Side Of..." (2010), with unabashed widescreen pop, resulting in her most accomplished album to date.

I THANK YOU: The Powder Monkeys / Tim Hemensley 10th Anniversary Gig
The Powder Monkeys are a legendary Australian band. Their take-no-prisoners adrenalin fuelled stage delivery is still engraved on the minds of many who saw them live. The band may never have been paid their dues but they certainly won the respect of the music community including heroes Lobby Loyde (the Coloured Balls) and Pete Wells (Rose Tattoo) who they often backed live. The Powder Monkeys toured overseas with the Hellacopters and producer Rick Rubin almost signed them to his label American Recordings in the late 1990s. While the Powder Monkeys were renowned for their intense live shows, they managed to capture their essence in great four-minute songs on their albums Smashed on a Knee, Time Wounds All Heels, Blood Sweat and Beers and Lost City Blues. The few covers which they played packed a punch too, including Sam & Dave's 1968 soul classic I Thank You and Chain's Black and Blue for the Dirty Deeds soundtrack and their last ever recording Black Tea for The Dogs (Detroit group) tribute CD which appeared on a posthumous Powder Monkeys compilation Outta Control Rock n Roll on the Dropkick label in 2005. The band ended tragically in mid 2003 when Tim Hemensley died, aged 31.
Singer and bass player, Tim Hemensley was a little man with a big heart who lived for rock'n'roll. He played in his first band at age 10 and at 11 interviewed Jello Biafra for his fanzine. He spent his teenage years in the band God, along with his pals Joel Silbersher, Matty Whittle and Sean Greenway. He was a member of Bored! for a short time before forming the Powder Monkeys in 1992 with John Nolan.
Since Tim Hemensley passed away on July 21st, 2003 his parents and friends have gathered at the Tote each anniversary to share a quiet drink for Tim. The music lives on, the Powder Monkeys songs are regularly blaring out of the Tote juke box. This year marks ten years and it is going to get even louder.
The Tote will host a huge day of live rock and roll over two stages with many bands Tim was friends with and loved including Hoss, Seminal Rats, Bored!, Power Line Sneakers (making their debut featuring John Nolan, Sly Splatterhead and Katie Dixon), The Casanovas, The Spazzys, The Onyas, Hits (Brisbane), Digger & the Pussycats, Wrong Turn, Fortress of Narzod, Leadfinger (Sydney) and The Undecided.
There are also a couple of younger bands the Powder Monkeys inspired but Tim never had the opportunity to see, but those close to him agree he would approve. The Swedish Magazines started a Powder Monkeys cover band, and singer Jack Davies of the Bitter Sweet Kicks awarded the Tim Hemensley medal for being the most rock on ground at last year's Community Cup footy match.
At the end of the night surviving members of the Powder Monkeys, guitarist John Nolan and drummer Timmy Jack Ray will share the stage with guest singers and musicians to perform a set of Powder Monkeys songs. Lined up so far is Joel Silbersher, Matty Whittle, Adalita, Dave Hogan, Roman Tucker, Sly Splatterhead, Spencer P Jones, Dick (Hits) and more to be announced.
The Powder Monkeys' debut album from 1993, Smashed On A Knee (originally released on the Dog Meat label), will be reissued in July by Freeform Patterns through Fuse Music. Newly remastered by Mikey Young, giving it the punch it always needed, featuring three bonus tracks and a 16-page booklet with previously unpublished photos and liner notes by Deniz Tek, Joel Silbersher, Mike Mariconda, David Laing and Dave Lang. A vinyl edition will follow later in the year along with the reissuing of their second album Time Wounds All Heels.
The annual Hemensley Cup footy match will kick off the day's celebrations at Victoria Park in Abbotsford from 11am with two short matches including a ladies' game. Tim Hemensley hated AFL but enjoyed the Community Cup.
This event (including the footy match) is proudly part of the Leaps and Bounds festival, which celebrates the music scene within the City of Yarra. Supercharged bands such as the Powder Monkeys who regularly played the Great Britain Hotel, the Tote and across the river in the Prince of Wales Piano Bar fortify Melbourne as the live music capital of Australia.
